The Fintech Voices You Need to Know

February 20, 2025

At its core, my job is to know people.

Not just anyone, but the people that matter to my clients and the companies looking to make a name for themselves in financial media. I keep a particular close eye on fintech, where personal recommendations and pans carry plenty of weight.

You must understand the players if you want to follow the game. I’ve compiled a list of Fintech MVPs that everyone, be they a product specialist, manager or even customer, should know. It’s a combination of journalists at established publications and those at less traditional platforms.

In this changing landscape, you’ll need more than one subscription to keep up (see my piece on Substack). Here’s my (highly subjective and not definitive) list, along with some observations and stories about the cohort.

Simon Taylor, Fintech Brainfood

If you enjoy newsletters with a surprisingly high number of hand drawn diagrams, Simon is for you. The weekly FintechBrainfood is more than five years old – several lifetimes in the realm of fintech. He’s a great stylist – a master of simple communication, even in the depths of the back office. There’s a feature where he does mini profiles of four companies to watch that is great for seeing the very latest talent.

Nicole Casperson, Fintech is Femme

Nicole is the founder and face of brand, which looks at fintech innovation through the lens of its female founders. Her weekly newsletter highlights female leadership in the industry as well as opinion pieces on the biggest stories from leading women. She hosts the Humans of Fintech podcast, which highlights the next generation of fintech leaders. Her next big bet is an vastly expanded leadership summit during April’s New York Fintech Week.

Hannah Lang, Reuters

Covering the businesses driving growth and innovation in the fintech industry as well as the policies shaping the fintech regulatory landscape, Hannah is at the forefront of the crypto and fintech world. Providing readers with valuable knowledge on the latest info on policies and activity shaping the crypto landscape.

With three years at both Reuters and American Bank, she knows how cut through the massive spin that rife inside crypto towards stories that really matter.

Ryan Lawler and Lucinda Shen, Axios

See Axios’ signature style – a tight wordcount, simple graphs, lots of section heads and summaries – applied to the world of fintech. Every weekday they cover the deals, launches and people moves shaping the fintech. Outside of the newsletter, they offer readers deep dives into the startups to watch. In a way, these pieces act as a sort of state of the fintech industry, showing what sub-sectors and areas are driving the attention of investors and the press.

Jason Mikula, Fintech Business Weekly

Jason’s path to being of fintech’s most influential influencers runs through two years volunteering on the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia and later working at product management at Goldman Sachs’ erstwhile Marcus unit. “Fintech Business Weekly” does exactly what it says, but with a panache and style that shows the author’s true passion. This is no boilerplate release. The quality of his newsletter means Jason is now an in demand speaker at banking and fintech conferences, so check the agenda and plan to stay ‘hi’.

Mary Ann Azevedo, TechCrunch

The future of the fintech world relies heavily on outside investment and successful capital raises. Mary Ann shares an immense interest in the investment activity driving the fintech world into the future. With new developments popping up almost daily, it can be difficult to stay on top of the news that matters most. Luckily for us, Mary Ann’s TechCrunch Fintech newsletter, a weekly roundup that gives a digestible, yet detailed look at the top fintech storylines. For the next wave of fintech companies seeking to raise their media profile, Mary Ann is the person you most want to know.

Lex Solokin, Fintech Blueprint

Lex’s a successful fintech entrepreneur constantly on the lookout for the next great fintech innovation. He’s a self-described “futurist” who studies trends and patterns, looking for the next breakthrough. Come to him with interesting rate or a novel way to read something that’s more widely known.  He has a deep-rooted interest in the fintech journey, sitting down with founders and entrepreneurs on his podcast to discuss their own journeys, successes and failures that drive them, and how they continue to innovate in an incredibly competitive sector.

Well, there you have it. I hope you enjoyed this look at who, in my view, are the most important players in fintech media. We might not know what the future holds but if you carve out time to read the latest content from the folks above, you’ll find yourself significantly more up to date on the latest happening across the fintech landscape.
